The wall

Where he's turned up

People keep putting him places. This is the wall where we keep track.

A Be Like Baxter bumper sticker pinned to a wall crowded with vintage licence plates, framed photographs, signed dollar bills and newspaper clippings

A bumper sticker is a small thing

It is also the entire plan. Somebody reads four words at a traffic light, looks them up, and decides to give a stranger the benefit of the doubt. That is how this spreads.

  • Wedged in among the licence plates, the dollar bills and somebody's old newspaper clipping. Exactly the company he'd have chosen.

  • Filed under good company: one Texas vanity plate, one parking sign nobody obeys, one Wheaten Terrier's life philosophy.

  • A city that puts a heart in its own name seemed like the right place to stop.

  • Between the Ducati badge and the fire extinguisher. Baxter would have liked the smell of this garage.

  • He never made it to Paris. The sticker did.

  • Somebody decided the Alps needed the message too. Hard to argue.

  • The original plan, and still the best one: put it where the car behind you has to read it.

  • A fresh stack, waiting to go out. There are more where these came from.
